Planting system / methods used in your Design

To start, the REPURPOSED wooden base was constructed from a piece of 4 x 4 fence post and fig tree branches. It’s the perfect support for the two coconut palm spathes that are affixed together with handmade wooden dowels. I’ve discovered this sculpture can be reconfigured by adjusting the spathes and gourd in different positions, allowing for the flexibility to showcase different samples of plants and planting options.

The beautiful, naturally curved snake gourd is tied to the structure with organic jute. It is completely dried and adds a dynamic line, which adds both contrast and intrigue.

Next, I added the Dracaenas (Dracaena braunii) which have been growing strong hydroponically in water for three years. They are easily maintained by changing the water in their REUSABLE vases every 2-3 weeks.

The Pothos cuttings also easily produce roots in water and look inviting in their clear REPURPOSED food jars. What a simple way to propagate more plants. The transparency of the water brings in the light and the presence of air bubbles means there is life. Everything about this little hydroponic system makes me HAPPY!

Next, the addition of String of Banana (Senecio radicans), a succulent with curved foliage and trailing stems, adds an interesting texture and cascading line. I created the “nest” with some coconut fiber and Passionflower (Passiflora) vines dug from my garden. The fiber helps to keep everything in place. A light misting every three weeks, depending on humidity is ideal.

REUSABLE glass water bubbles house cuttings of Trandescantia zebrina, encouraging production of roots. It’s easy to REGENERATE new plants by planting the cuttings in soil.

Lastly, each large drought tolerant Echeveria (Echeveria pulidonis) has been removed from their pots. The roots are extended and supported by a REPURPOSED length of orchid wire, bulked up with newspaper and wrapped with organic jute. This allows the Echeveria to be suspended away from the structure individually, and with their babies in tow. The curvaceous lines of the extended “root” mimic the line in the snake gourd. These require the same type of care as the String of Banana.

Consumers can easily be encouraged to explore more of these types of plants for their ease of care and guaranteed success. Yes, we want more people to fall in love with these amazing green specimens!

LIVING PLANTS help us connect with MOTHER EARTH, create an atmosphere of calm in our homes and ultimately improve our health and well being.
